About Mommelas
Mommelas blossomed from the confines of a comically small home kitchen during the lockdown of 2020 - a time when film and TV production came to a standstill, and I was nothing but home with my 3 year old and newborn son. Fun fact: My big boy was the source of inspiration for our signature creation - the rainbow party challah.
What began as casual baking sessions with my son quickly evolved into something more. I started selling my challah and matzo ball soup to local moms through a Facebook BST group. I then expanded to sell via Instagram and at pop up markets and events all over Los Angeles. In the summer of 2023, I ran Summer in the Kitchen with Mommelas - a cooking and crafts specialty camp for 1st - 3rd grade kids through Silverlake Day Camp at the SIJCC. I fell in love with teaching and now offer private and group challah baking classes to both adults and kids.
Possibly more unexpected than a costume designer falling into a home baked hustle was how spiritually and soulfully rewarding this work is for me. When I say Mommelas food is made with heaps of Momma love, it is truly no schtick. I pour my heart and soul into each creation, viewing this work as an act of service and a love song to my ancestors. Magic happens at the table when we break bread together and Mommelas is here to spread Jewish love and joy.
